Mt. Kanlaon (Canlaon) is known to the ancient Visayans as the home of the supreme creator goddess Laon. Famous for its virgin forests and high biodiversity, Kanlaon is also the highest mountain in the Visayas and it is in the list of must-do's of every dedicated Filipino mountaineer. After the photo of the First Kanlaon Safari, 11 photographs are from a group climb in which Michelle Lizares Si and Josephine Lizares Si were participants. This climb took the Mambucal Trail and passed by the Jardine Sang Balo and the Lagoon, two well known stopping points along the way to the crater. The bigger set of pictures is from a protest climb that was held in 2008. When Mt. Kanlaon was established as a Natural Park in 2001, 169 hectares of primary forest were changed from strict protection zone to "buffer zone for geothermal development." The protest climb was conducted without a permit and as a consequence, 28 individuals who were part of the climb were charged with trekking without a permit. In defense, they said they were exercising their right to express dissent against the government. It was not a trek.
